An Ifrit Primer
Aug. 26th, 2013 08:29 amIfrit – n. A being of fire from Islamic myth, stronger than men or spirits.
The Ifrit used to live like desert nomads, wandering from watering hole to watering hole, with their camels, and their families. Often, they married into human clans, or the humans came to marry them.
Ifrit mature much more slowly than humans. Though, physically, they might look like they are mature, it is considered taboo to marry an Ifrit before they are a hundred years old. They cling to the old ways even in modern culture, allowing only the chief of the tribe to approve marriages.
They can shift into beings of fire, and take on several other forms: Dogs, winged humans, or a simple human. Fire is their element and they control it absolutely within a few feet of their body. They can communicate through fire with one another. Speak into a fire, say a name with Intent, and they can speak to the other if they are near a fire.
Ifrit can be subjugated. However, it takes a powerful holy man, wizard sorcerer or warlock to do so. They also must be constantly held in check, because if given the chance, an Ifrit will lash back on the “master” and teach them that fire burns.
They are faster and stronger than humans. They also can use fire to move from one area to another. This was particularly useful when humans used fire for heating and cooking. In modern times it is not nearly as convenient.
They are considered a part of the djinn, and are not known for their magnanimous natures. Like the djinn, they can be summoned through rituals and spells lost to the annals of time.
